Randy Zimmerman graduated from the University of
North Texas in 1977 with a Bachelor of Music degree in
Dance Band and later earned a Master of Music degree
in Performance - Jazz Emphasis at the University of
Texas at Austin in 2006. After freelancing in New
York City in the late 70's, eventually working with
Tito Puente and La India, he toured Europe with the
Klaus Lenz Jazz-Rock Machine, returning to his native
Texas in 1980. Since that time, he has worked as a
professional trombonist, band leader, arranger and
composer. Band projects led by Randy Zimmerman
include: Jazz PR (Latin-Jazz/Salsa), the Jazz Nomads
(Hard Bop Sextet), the Southern Reconstruction Brass
Band (Modern New Orleans Street Band), the Low CLASS
Brass (Classical Trombone Quartet), the Dixie Scat
Cats (Traditional Dixieland Jazz), the Wurst Brats
(German-Texas Polka), and the Lonestar Space Orchestra
(modern jazz/swing big band.)
Since the mid 80's, Randy Zimmerman has been very
active in the Latin-Jazz/Salsa scene in the Austin-San
Antonio area. He has backed up world-renowned artists
such as "El Cano" Estremera, Pete "El Conde"
Rodriguez, Tito Allen, Paquito Guzman, Marvin
Santiago, Lalo Rodriguez, Eddie Santiago and Chamaco
Rivera. His arrangements and compositions can be heard
on three Jazz PR recordings: Changüiri (1991), La
Brisa Del Sur (1996), and Wiilly Santiago con Jazz PR
- Regreso A Borinquen (2001). While co-producing the
third recording in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mr.
Zimmerman was a featured guest soloist with the Tony
Vega Orchestra.
Currently, Randy Zimmerman continues to teach,
play and write music in Austin, and has recently begun
his own booking agency called Z-Man Music.
